Phone batteries degrade over time — that's simply how lithium-ion chemistry works. Every charge cycle slightly reduces the battery's maximum capacity, and after two or three years of regular use, most batteries are running at significantly less than their original capacity. The question is: how do you know when it's time to replace yours?
Here are the five most reliable signs, based on what we see daily at our Yiewsley repair shop.
When a phone is new, the battery should comfortably last a full day of normal use. If you now find yourself reaching for a charger by mid-afternoon — or earlier — without having done anything unusual with the phone, your battery capacity has likely dropped significantly. This is the most common complaint we hear from customers coming in from Yiewsley, West Drayton and Hayes. A new battery restores that all-day performance.
Your phone suddenly switches off even though the battery indicator was showing 15%, 20% or even 30%. This is a classic sign of a failing battery. As batteries age, they lose the ability to maintain a stable voltage under load. When the phone demands extra power — for example, when the processor runs hard — the battery voltage drops suddenly and the phone interprets this as an empty battery and shuts down to protect itself.
A healthy battery shows a steadily declining percentage. If yours is jumping — say, from 40% to 10% in minutes, or suddenly jumping back up when you plug it in — that's a calibration and capacity issue caused by battery degradation. The phone's battery management system can no longer accurately estimate how much charge remains.
Some warmth during charging is normal. But if your phone becomes uncomfortably hot — too hot to hold comfortably — during a standard charge, this can indicate a failing battery working harder than it should to accept charge. Excessive heat during charging also accelerates further battery degradation, so it's worth addressing quickly.
This one requires immediate action. A swollen battery looks like a bubble beneath the back of the phone, or the screen starts to lift slightly from the frame. This is caused by gas building up inside the battery cells as they degrade. A swollen battery is a safety risk — do not charge the phone, avoid pressure on the device, and bring it to us straight away. On iPhone: go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple recommends replacement when capacity drops below 80%. On most Android devices, you can find battery health in the settings or via a diagnostic app. Some Samsung models display health information in the device care menu.
